MATTHEW PETHICK: Classical Cut Outs - Tue 08 Nov - Sat 03 Dec
Devon based artist Maddy Pethick presents a new series of simple collage works configured from found images lifted from tired, dated fashion books. Through careful selection, cutting and arrangement, a sequence of concise, fragmented figures reference classical antiquities where arms, legs and heads fall off sculptures over time. This work was realized following an incubator studio residency here at Exeter Phoenix where Maddy re-examined her vast collection of source material in the form of outmoded books collected encyclopedically from local charity shops.
THE BEST OF DOUBLE ELEPHANT PRINT WORKSHOP - Tue 06 Dec - Sat 31 Dec
Showcasing the work of some of Double Elephant’s 90 artist members, this exhibition features a selection of the region’s best examples of fine art printmaking to inspire and enthral.
LUCY APPLE : Wed 04 Jan - Sat 28 Jan
An exhibition about conversations with strangers, friends and family. Lucy Apple likes the interaction between people, their body language and facial expressions. She enjoys making people laugh and by adding humour to the paintings, she feels she can tell the stories of these conversations. These figurative works are made with diluted acrylics with watercolour pencils on canvas and board.
BRIAN FROUD : Tue 31 Jan - Sat 25 Feb
Works from the Devon-based artist and conceptual designer known for his imaginative illustrations that inspired the puppets in Jim Henson's film 'The Dark Crystal' (1982), screened as part of the Animated Exeter Festival.
FRANCESCA BAXTER-HUNTER : Tue 28 Feb - Wed 28 Mar
Wooden panels which intricately reflect the coastline, through texture, colour, drawn line and mark making. An attempt to capture a coastal moment in time that can be experienced wherever you are and communicate the effects, consequences and changes that occur along our beautiful coastline.
CATHERINE KNIGHT : Tue 27 Mar - Sat 21 Apr
In trying to piece together and make sense of my own history I come across gaps and holes where knowledge has been lost. Sontag has described the photograph as "an imaginary possession of a past that is unreal" and this provides an entry point to Catherine Knight’s paintings.
Working from old family photographs, this selection of her smaller works explores themes of memory and loss through the fluidity of paint.
The Exeter Phoenix Art Galleries are open Mon - Sat 10am - 5pm and Sundays 11.30am - 5pm.
