The University of Exeter Gilbert & Sullivan Society made its stage debut in 1968 with The Yeomen of the Guard. Not only are they Exeter's oldest amateur Gilbert & Sullivan society, but also one of the longest running student societies on campus.
Students of the University of Exeter run the society to produce, direct, and perform the shows annually whilst juggling their studies with their love of performance. The society’s aim for the past 44 years has been to entertain audiences with its vivacious approach to these works, bringing enthusiasm and youthful energy to the stage.
The sixth operetta from this legendary duo was first performed in 1881 at the Opera Comique, later moving to the Savoy Theatre after great success. Patience is said to have been a favourite of Sir Charles Mackerras, the late conductor with a passion for Gilbert and Sullivan music. Sir Arthur Sullivan’s score is both tender and lively, marrying beautifully with the writing of W.S.Gilbert.
The cast is witty, animated and jubilant throughout, coupling traditional classical sounds with the essential playfulness any Gilbert & Sullivan show demands. Patience promises to exude English eccentricity with charm and elegance.
Whether you are a seasoned Gilbert & Sullivan follower or new to comic operetta this performance of Patience is a most see.
