Exeter - Bikeshed : Tin Girls

A mixed-media project by photographer Alice Carfrae to concide with International Women's Day.

It is said that in Sindhupalchok, Nepal, you can tell which household has sold a daughter, or lost a mother by looking at the rooftops of the village. The ones with corrugated tin roofs indicate that a sacrifice has been made; a selfless act to try and better the family's situation. The unaffectionate nickname given to these women is 'Tin Girls'.

Tin Girls is a mixed media project featuring the photography of Alice Carfrae and testimonies from these brave Nepalese women. Documentary photographer Alice travelled to Sindupalchowk in North-Eastern Nepal, an area that is particularly heavily affected by trafficking. During her time in Sindupalchowk, Alice stayed with a number of families of the survivors and whilst there photographed and interviewed a number of the women who were willing to share their stories.

All proceeds from this event will be donated to the charity - Free the Slaves.
