The Exeter Bach Society in an uplifting orchestral performance of the classical and choral music of Bach and Haydn.

This 'Spring Harmony' concert will feature Bach's choral work Missa Brevis in F, his orchestral Suite No 3 in D and Haydn's Mass in B flat entitled Harmoniemesse.

Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer, organist, harpsichordist, violist, and violinist whose sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra, and solo instruments. He drew together the strands of the Baroque period and brought it to its ultimate maturity - influencing many other musicians of the period.

Austrian Franz Joseph Haydn was one of the most prolific and prominent composers of the Classical period. He is often called the "Father of the Symphony” and "Father of the String Quartet because of his important contributions to these music forms.

The Exeter Bach Society was formed in 1955. The Society's Honorary Patron is world famous Bach organist Peter Hurford who has shown great interest in the Society's work and attends their concerts from time to time.

The Society's Director of Music is Nicholas Marshall. Nicholas was born in Plymouth in 1942, He read music at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, and then studied composition at the Royal College of Music under Anthony Milner. He also studied privately with Sir Lennox Berkeley. While at Cambridge he was active as a composer, having his first works published during this time. Sadly this spring concert will mark the retirement of Nicholas as the society's musical director. From September David Davies, Cathedral Assistant Director of Music, will be taking over this role.

Soloists for this concert will be: Samatha Crawford - Soprano, Marta Fontanals-Simmons - Mezzo Soprano, Simon Geffler - Tenor
David Rudge - Bass
