Tiverton Castle, Tiverton

Part Grade I listed and part Scheduled Ancient Monument, few buildings evoke such an immediate feeling of history as Tiverton Castle, originally built in 1106 on orders of Henry I and later rebuilt and enlarged down the ages. Originally home of the powerful medieval Earls of Devon and of Pantagenet Princess, it was later besieged during the English Civil War by Fairfax and fell to him due to a lucky shot hitting the drawbridge chain.

Nowadays the castle is a peaceful, private house and the buildings, interesting furnishings and exhibits reflect the colourful history and development of this venerable building. There is a fine Civil War Armoury, some pieces of which can be tried on which is popular with visitors of all ages. With continuing conversation in the castle and beautiful walled gardens there is always something new and interesting to see.

Last Admission at 5pm.
