Exeter's Quayside is one of the most attractive areas of the city. Its history dates back to the Roman times, and there is still evidence of Exeter's wealthy maritime past in the fascinating architecture. Cloth produced in the local area was finished at Cricklepit Mill, and the Custom House was built in 1680 to house the officials who collected taxes on traded goods.
Today Exeter's Quayside embraces its industrial heritage whilst providing a vibrant and modern area to shop, eat, relax and play. There are several restaurants, pubs and cafes on the Quayside, where you can sit outside and watch the world go by.
The Quayside is a great place for shopping, with an eclectic mix of antiques, and crafts from workshops located in historic cellars and bonded warehouses.
In the summer months, the Quayside is a hub of activity, with an extensive programme of events including Dragon Boat racing! There are regular boat trips operated by Exeter Cruises, or cross the river on Butts Ferry, one of only five floating bridges in the country! You can also hire canoes and pedalos from the Quayside.
