There is so much to see and do in 'disability access friendly' Heart of Devon. First, why not visit Exeter Shopmobility where you will find a number of manual and powered wheelchairs/ scooters (advisable to book in advance), making access to the shops and town centre facilities even easier?
Exeter has good shopping areas for disabled visitors, especially the undercover shopping malls and the new Princesshay shopping/dining area - a delightful spot for eating outside in warm weather. The Quayside is another very pleasant location that has good disabled access, where visitors can enjoy watching canoes, pedaloes, and the swan population, sample alfresco meals in friendly eating places, and explore level waterside walks with good surfaces.
Many attractions in the Heart of Devon are also disabled access friendly such as Exeter Picturehouse which has good access, welcomes guide dogs, and has induction loops fitted in both screens. Exeter Cathedral is another good access attraction with a "touch and hearing" centre with taped commentary for the visually impaired, guided tour on cassette, and Braille material.
Further afield there are a whole host of exciting places to visit such as Killerton House (NT) where the ground floor has good access, and golf buggy trips convey less able people around the splendid gardens, while seaside towns like Budleigh Salterton and Teignmouth have broad promenades with great sea views. Contact the local tourist information centre for further information on what is available.
The following information represents the first stage in the work of the Heart of Devon Tourism Partnership to provide information about disabled access in the area.
