We are a 273 acre beef/sheep/cereal family run farm, situated in heart of rural Mid-Devon or Devonshire’s Heartland as it is known.
We have a delightful picturesque thatched country cottage by the river or a barn conversion nearer to the farmhouse. Breakfast can be taken in the farmhouse if required.
If you enjoy visitng gardens the spring & summer is perfect. Our position makes it an ideal base for visiting all parts of our wonderful county with its varied landscape from wind swept Dartmoor to the rolling coombes of Exmoor and the rugged North Devon coast with the long sandy beaches of Saunton and Woolacombe. Tiverton is a busy market town just 20 minutes drive away with pannier markets on Tuesday, Friday & Saturday. Crediton famous for St. Boniface is again only 20 minutes drive. Then within 35 minutes we have the cathedral city of Exeter with the new Princesshay shopping centre.
Come and gain an insight to the life of today’s farmer as we live it 365 days a year. Summer 2008 we are having our farmhouse re-thatched, watch these craftsmen at work.
We keep about 300 ewes which we lamb in February and March and beef store cattle for fattening in the winter. We also have a few pedigree Devon cattle. Corn is grown to feed to them with hay and silage making us self-sufficient in animal food. Any surplus we sell to local horse owners.
There is an abundance of birds and wildlife to see. We regularly see barn owls (we have 2 nest boxes with one occupied), little owls. Buzzards, pheasants, curlews (who nest here) & skylarks are a regular sight. Around the farmyard, swallows, swifts & house martins all nest. We have a large population of sparrows who love our thatched roof! As the light fades bats put in their appearance. We also have dormice on the farm.
We are farming to enhance the environment within the stewardship schemes of ELS & HLS to help encourage flower & fauna around the farm. Putting back an orchard & a wood are two projects at the moment.
WHITE WITCHES
It was newly thatched in May 2002 and when the garden is in full bloom it is the epitomy of the chocolate box cottage. In 2007 it has been completely updated but still retaining its character, ideal for couples or a family.
The enclosed lawned garden has a picnic table and chairs with plenty of space for children to play and adults to relax.
A gate leads to open fields sometimes with our sheep wandering by and the river where you can wander along its banks and watch the wildlife, ducks, herons or you may be lucky to catch the flashing blue of a kingfisher. Count the number of different birds you can see or different wild flowers
STABLE BARN
A grade II listed barn which has been converted to a high standard in 1997 with many of the original beams remaining giving it a cottage feel. It is situated at the entrance to Hele Barton but with its own enclosed secluded garden great for relaxing in, with lawn and patio with seating and barbacue. A great place for families or a cosy retreat for just a couple on a break away from it all with all the comforts. Should you be less able the wetroom is ideal. We can also bring a single bed downstairs.
