Here in the Heart of Devon we pride ourselves on being home to a traditional favourite: the cream tea! There’s nothing better than a homemade scone covered in clotted cream and jam. Whether you’re sat out in the sunshine or cosied in next to a roaring fire – a cream tea is the perfect treat to help make it a great day out.

Early 2013 is dedicated to the Heart of Devon’s spectacular cream teas. Loads of attractions, cafes, restaurants, hotels, self-catering properties and B&B’s are getting involved to make sure you get to experience the best of our cream teas.

The Heart of Devon has put together a ‘Cream Tea’ trail – a map showing all the locations of the businesses involved so you know wherever you go in the Heart of Devon a cream tea is always close by. Take a look at the map below to see where everyone is!

Below is information of the various businesses across the Heart of Devon and how they’re getting involved.

Sidholme Hotel - This elegant Georgian mansion is set within 9 acres of beautiful grounds, 10 minutes’ walk from Sidmouth’s centre. With a 15-metre pool, it also boasts a grand music room with chandeliers and a Gothic organ. With lovely garden views, the bright and warmly furnished bedrooms each include free Fair-trade tea and coffee, and a private bathroom with a hairdryer.

Free parking is available, and Peak Hill, with its stunning views over the town, is just a 5-minute drive away.

Real Food Store - The Real Food Store, Exeter’s first community owned food business. The Real Food Store offers local, fresh and seasonal food and drink, at an honest price. What's more the cafe upstairs serves delicious, home-made cream teas, with scones made on the premises, fantastic for when you need that break from the hustle and bustle of town!


Arundell Arms -  Offer a cream tea with homemade scones. Also available is homemade fruit cake, shortbread and ginger biscuits available.


Fresha - Passionate about Food, Serious about Service. Offering a 2 for 1 tea and cake offer on Mondays between 10.00am and 4.00pm - to use this offer make sure you mention 'Heart of Devon Cream Tea', when you're ordering. All of their cakes are made in house by the team. The tea is loose leaf, including such flavours as:

  • Green tea Sencha
  • Whole peppermint leaf
  •  Red berry
  •  Roobios
  • Camomile
  •  Apple loves mint

Seaton Tramway - superb setting for sublime cream teas

Set in an Area of outstanding Natural Beauty, award winning Seaton Tramway runs a unique narrow gauge electric tramway on a three mile route between Seaton and Colyton in East Devon.

Visitors are transported on lovingly restored vehicles from a bygone era from the stunning Jurassic coast along the magnificent Axe Valley estuary, through three nature reserves, to Colyton.

And there’s a further treat there not to be missed. The most gorgeous cream teas are served at the Tramstop: freshly brewed tea with enormous homemade scones, a generous dollop of Devon clotted cream and jam. Enjoy in the cosy cafe or on the platform terrace to soak up the atmosphere.


The Bulstone - Cream teas or scream teas at the Bulstone join the dinosaurs to enjoy a cream tea with a difference  rocky road , dinosaur eggs , cheese scones ....a Jurassic speciality  the list goes on ideal for the young and not so young .we have a special selection to celebrate the area , squashed fly cakes  chocolate droppings.... all this and much more at The bulstone  We have tried to create a different cream tea but all the traditional bits will be there as well lashings of cream ,jam ....which way round is up to you and tea to enjoy.


Delimann - To enjoy an authentic afternoon cream tea delivered to you at home - you need look no further than the Delimann.  Delivered anywhere in the UK from their  Dartmoor base, freshly baked scones, Devonshire clotted cream, award winning strawberry jam, tea blended in the West Country accompanied by a selection of Devon treats can all be sent beautifully packaged on a next day courier service. The Greyhound Inn - Traditional family run Devonshire thatched Inn, offers home-made cream teas with Devon clotted cream & home made jam, served with a pot of tea [or coffee] for £4.95  per person. High Tea, egg & cucumber sandwiches with a selection of pasteries and cakes with a pot of  tea just $5.95 per person. Served by our real log fire in the winter of our large garden in the summer. Large car park, children & well behaved dogs always welcome.


Reed Hall Café - Reed Hall is a stunning grade II listed mansion, a hidden treasure nestled in 300 acres of enchanting landscaped gardens. This stunning house is a fine example of traditional architecture complemented by modernity – the perfect backdrop for any event.

Café Reed is the perfect place to escape the madding crowd and enjoy a peaceful coffee in cosy and relaxed surroundings. Choose from our seasonal menu of lunches and light bites, including a range of fresh, locally produced cakes. Or, why not treat yourself to an exquisite cream tea, incorporating the finest local ingredients and Fairtrade tea. We are open from Mon – Fri 10am – 3pm.

With free parking and free wi-fi access, once you’re here and settled, you won’t want to leave.


Combe House Devon - A warm welcome from Ruth Hunt awaits you at this elegant Grade 1 Elizabethan country  manor , nr Honiton, with stunning views, set in beautiful gardens & 3,500 acres of one of Devon’s finest estates –“somewhere different , somewhere special”.

Combe’s two talented Master Chefs of GB, always use the finest of local ingredients , including the fruit for their jams, all homegrown in their huge restored Victorian Kitchen Gardens.

Twistgate Farm Cottages -  Welcome all their guests with a complimentary cream tea on arrival. The scones are home made as is the jam, which uses their own fruit, and of course the clotted cream is from the West Country!


The Salty Monk - are open for Cream teas everyday. They have 22 loose leaf teas to choose from. Scones are made on the premises as are the preserves, clotted Cream comes from the nearby yarty valley. We also offer a Champagne Tea with glass of Pink Bubbles, Meringues fresh Berries and a Cream Tea, and our famous Carrot Cake. There are other cakes, homemade cookies and tea loaf. On sundays we offer a Salty Monk Tea, full english afternoon tea with selection of Sandwiches, cakes, Scones Jam Cream & choice of Teas. We have award winning gardens in which to enjoy them or our Gallery Room which showcases local artists work, Jewellery Paintings, silk scarves etc.. Scones are cooked to order to ensure that they are fresh for every customer.


Larkbeare Grange - A delightful bed and breakfast, Larkbeare Grange is nestled in a peaceful setting close to Exeter.  The beautiful Georgian House was sympathetically restored to provide first class service at a fair price.  Enjoy a fabulous Devon cream tea when you check in with Aga baked scones made with West Country organic flour, our own homemade jam and Devon clotted cream.  This is served with a choice of teas or coffee in front of a welcoming fire in the sitting room.


Escot Park - At Escot a delicious cream tea often follows a magical encounter with our red squirrels who will often come down to greet visitors in our walk-through Red Squirrel Encounter opposite the Coach House Restaurant. Escot cream teas are not suitable for squirrels but perfect for our visitors! Enjoy 2 home-made scones, a choice of fruit jams, Devon clotted cream and a pot of tea or cup of coffee for £4.50. A savoury version is available for those who are sweet enough already and delicious gluten free scones are also usually available.

Fursdon House -  Fursdon is a country estate in fabulous countryside only half an hour from Exeter and it’s the home of the Fursdon family who have lived here for more than 750 years. The Coach Hall tea room is open on special days through the year when the house and gardens are open too. On cooler days there’ll be a log fire burning in the Coach Hall; if the sun is shining you can sit outside in the cobbled courtyard and enjoy amazing views across the Exe valley. All our scones and cakes are freshly made here!


Route 2 Café Bar - Route 2 Topsham is a fully licensed Café Bar with a twist! Situated on the National Cycle Route 2 along the Exe Estuary it is a real eco bar offering everything from Homemade Ice Creams through to Local Topsham Ales. It’s cycle themed ( Cycle Shop on site too) relaxed café serves fantastic Miles Teas and Coffees and who cannot resist the lure of a Devon Cream Tea. Many baked Items are Gluten Free too including our Heart Shaped Scones. Open from  8am every morning for our Famous Full Route Breakfasts, Lunches or Dinner.


At The Terrace café, the Devon Guild of Craftsmen - A popular venue for walkers, tourists and craft lovers on the edge of Dartmoor, The Terrace serves up the créme of cream teas, with freshly baked scones and locally sourced jam and cream - as hand-made as the craft in our gallery and shop. Hearty and delicious – and a great price at £4.95 - our cream teas come with fruit and plain scones. We offer take-away and child-friendly cream teas too. What could be better: a stunning range of contemporary craftwork and the friendly, creative ambience of our café. Craft and a cream tea - all hand-made in the West Country.


Pecorama - All their scones and cakes are made daily on the premises and all from locally sourced ingredients. They are served in their wonderful Garden Room Restaurant with stunning views over Lyme Bay and uniquely in the Orion Pullman Car  where you can also soak up the ambience reminiscent of days gone by.


Fox and Hounds Country Hotel -  The hotel prides itself in friendliness and welcoming service.  Their award winning kitchen, with one rosette makes all of the scones and they are sizeable in comparison to others we find elsewhere-a proper cream tea you might call them!  The entire menu is sourced from local produce, supporting our local suppliers and businesses alike.  The jam and the clotted cream are produced and sourced from Devon & Cornwall suppliers.


Mazzard Farm - Welcome guests with a home-cooked cream tea and in Apple harvest season (early September onwards), they sometimes add a little bit of apple to the scones which gives them a lovely crispy edge.


Magdalen Chapter - What makes the hotel a perfect venue for afternoon tea is the host of different spaces where people can sit down and relax. Guests may plump to take up residence in the Library which overlooks the beautiful gardens or perhaps sit in the more contemporary surroundings of the Lounge which has floor to ceiling windows making it a beautiful bright space.  For warmer days, guests can opt to have their afternoon tea in the The Garden. The hotel celebrates everything about a Devon Cream Tea. For £12.50 per person, guests can enjoy a full afternoon tea.


ABode Exeter - With it's range of restaurant and café ABode offer visitors and guests alike a fine selction of Cream Tea and Afternoon Tea choices including:

  • Champagne afternoon tea

Gidleigh Park -   a beautiful Tudor style country house hotel is set in an idyllic location within Dartmoor National Park on the banks of the North Teign River. Gidleigh Park is a magnificent 107 acre estate of mature woodland and grounds. It is a perfect place to savour culinary delights prepared by award-winning, Executive Head Chef Michael Caines MBE, using the finest local produce.  Afternoon Tea: Served daily from 3.30pm - 5pm , numbers are very limited so please do book in advance, maximum numbers for any one booking are 8 guests.


West Pitt Farm - beautiful self-catering cottages close by to all the cream tea action!


The Bark House - Delicious cream teas served daily (excl Monday) with home made scones, Devon splits, and a selection of cakes, all home made, served with our own strawberry jam and clotted cream from Westons Farm, Bampton. Going to of from Exmoor on the A396 the Bark House is an ideal place for morning coffee or a cream tea.
